• ~Psalm 46:4-5~

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy dwelling places of the Most High. God is in the midst of her, she will not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns.

Anne Girl Giveaway

When I went to the bookstore in search of Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery and the clerk had to escort me to the children’s section, I must admit, I was a little embarrassed. I had the sinking sensation that perhaps my girlhood friend Anne would not live up to the idealizations I’ve cast in my memory.

But it turns out that a kindred spirit remains a kindred spirit at any age. I have loved, loved, LOVED reacquainting myself with this delightful little girl. Only now I find myself equally drawn to the other kindred spirits in the book. I want to know more about Miss Stacy, for example. She seems like such a good teacher. And I had forgotten about Mrs. Allen, as well.

Anyway, tomorrow night I plan to post some of my favorite quotes from the book. If you’d like a chance to win a FREE copy of Anne of Green Gables (not my copy, since I want to read it again, but another copy without any flu germs on it) then you need to post your favorite quote (it does not have to be from the book) in my response section before midnight Wednesday Sunday night. (Time extended to fit in with the Bloggy Giveaway carnival. Check it out for more chances to win free stuff!)

I will pick MY favorite of the quotes posted and then I will get in touch with the winner so that I can ship you a brand new copy of Anne of Green Gables (most likely from Amazon.com). Please make sure that I can contact you. I am not a mind reader. So please, leave a link to your blog or an e-mail address where I can find you if you win!

  1. It’s Anne, with an “E”!

  2. It’s not my favorite Anne quote, but the first favorite quote that leapt to mind is from C.S. Lewis’s Reflections on the Psalms:

“For we are so little reconciled to time that we are even astonished at it. ‘How he’s grown!’ we exclaim, ‘How time flies!’ as though the universal form of our experience were again and again a novelty. It is as strange as if a fish were repeatedly surprised at the wetness of water. And that would be strange indeed; unless of course the fish were destined to become, one day, a land animal.”

  3. There are SOOOO many good ones, like christy I love “anne with an E” because that is what I always say (my middle name is Anne) and have already taught my 6 yo daughter the same thing.

I relate to Anne on so many levels and have read and reread ALL of the Anne books.

My favorite is “It’s so easy to be wicked without knowing it, isn’t it? “

  4. I’m a big quote person…my latest came from the movie “Coach Carter”:

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.

  5. My favorite quote comes from the movie “Facing The Giants” and it was said by Coach Taylor …

“Your attitude is the aroma of your heart. If your attitude stinks, it means your heart’s not right.”

Another quote from Coach Taylor that has kept me sane through all the turmoil we’ve suffered the past few days is:

“I want God to bless this team so much that people talk about what He did. But we need to give Him our best in every area. And if we win, we praise Him; and if we lose we praise Him. Either way. We honor Him with our actions and our attitudes.”

  6. Hey there swap buddie!

“You cannot change the past, my friend. But you can start today with a brand new beginning and a brand new end.”

I cannot remember who said that, but it’s one of my favorites.

I love Anne of Green Gables!

  7. I’m so excited about this. I LOVE Anne!!!! Quotes…Oh! There are so many that I love and find so funny! I can relate to most of them.

“It’s so easy to be wicked without knowing it, isn’t it? “

“Marilla, isn’t it nice to think that tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet?”

“It’s all very well to read about sorrows and imagine yourself living through them heroically, but it’s not so nice when you really come to have them, is it?”

  8. I read Anne of Green Gables when I was a kid, and when I asked my mom for my copy (she keeps all the books), she hadn’t a clue where it was! I need a new one so I can reread it!

    One of my favorite quotes:

“Run mad as often as you choose, but do not faint.” – Mansfield Park (the movie)

I’m sure it’s not my all-time favorite, but I never remember such things when asked. I had to look to see what I had listed on my facebook profile!

  9. Oh, magic hour when a child first knows it can read printed words!

For quite a while, Francie had been spelling out letters, sounding them and then putting the sounds together to mean a word. But one day, she looked at a page and the word “mouse” had instantaneous meaning. She looked at the word, and the picture of a gray mouse scampered through her mind. She looked further and when she saw “horse,” she heard him pawing the ground and saw the sun glint on his glossy coat. The word “running” hit her suddenly and she breathed hard as though running herself. The barrier between the individual sound of each letter and the whole meaning of the word was removed and the printed word meant a thing at one quick glance. She read the pages rapidly and almost became ill with excitement. She wanted to shout it out. She could read! She could read!

From that time on, the world was hers for the reading. She would never be lonely again, never miss the lack of intimate friends. Books became her friends and there was one for every mood. There was poetry for quiet companionship. There was adventure when she tired of quiet hours. There would be love stories when she came into adolescence and when she wanted to feel a closeness to someone she could read a biography. On that day when she first knew she could read, she made a vow to read one book a day as long as she lived.

  10. I love the quote “Tomorrow is a new day, with no mistakes in it.”

  11. Awsome!!! Thanks!!!

  12. Can you believe I don’t think I have ever read this book! How sad. I would love it for both me, and for my daughter, who used to watch an Anne of Green Gables animated series…she loved it!

My favorite quote comes from Charles Dickens: “It is no small thing when they, who are so fresh from God, love us.” Check out my blog, and you’ll see why!

  13. I love this book! One of my favorite quotes is “There is nothing like staying home for real comfort” – Jane Austen. Thanks for the giveaway!

  14. I love Anne of Green Gables! My best friend and actually call each other “my anne” and “my diana”… wait, should I have admitted that? We aren’t crazy!!!

My favorite quote right now is by John Abbot:
“You can never regret any amount of labor you have expended, any sacrifices you have made, any sufferings you have undergone, to train up your children to be with you the heirs of a glorious immortality.
O there is enough, abundantly enough, to encourage every parent to unwearied exertions!”

  15. My favorite quote…although simple, is “don’t do what you love…..love what you do”. It is soo basic and sweet, i think! 🙂 It reminds me to enjoy whatever I am doing…and try to find joy in each situation..even if I am cleaning the toilet or scrubbing a floor….do it with a happy heart…and it makes life so much more pleasant!!!

I am a TOTAL anne of green gables fan! I don’t have the books though. My sister does..and so I always figured I would borrow them from her…but i would LOVE to own one of my own! Thank you for this chance and have a great rest of your week! 🙂

  16. Too funny! I just watched the first DVD today… my hubby actually introduced me to Anne Girl because he grew up watching the Canadian movie with Megan Follows.

Anyway, my favorite quote from the first side of the first DVD is from Rachel Lindt

“Oh… my afternoon is spoiled! I won’t have a moment’s peace until I know what that man is up to!” or when she says, “I’m known throughout these parts as a woman who speaks her mind.”

Perhaps the funniest quote is when Anne asks Diana for a lock of her “black tresses” and Diana responds with, “But I don’t own any black dresses”!

*SIGH* I wished they made movies/books like they used to. I don’t own the books and I’m a READER! Thanks for your consideration!!!

  17. Love kills hate, trust kills jealousy, forgiveness kills malice, compassion kills hatred.

  18. I’ll admit that I had to look the exact quote up. I just knew that Anne and I were always kindred spirits because we thought out red hair and freckles were an awful burden. The quote I was thinking of is ” I did suffer terribly over my hair and my freckles.” But, just like Anne, I’ve learned to tolerate them as an adult.

  19. When my daughter moved out she took all the Anne stuff and I miss it ;O0.

“What we do in life echoes in eternity.

“Remember who you are and who you represent” – Mom

  20. Very simply put

The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing.
    Walt Disney

  21. i love the part that says something like, “tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it.” isn’t that a great way to think?! oh how i love anne of green gables…it has been years since i have read those books and i would love to read them again! thegoodmanfam at msn dot com

  22. My all-time favorite movie! So many great quotes, here’s a good one: “Good friends are always together in Spirit” Anne Shirley

  23. “You’d find it easier to be bad than good if you had red hair,” “People who haven’t red hair don’t know what trouble is.”

  24. My favorite quote comes from my former band director at Auburn University. It has become my motto for life. “Early is on time, on time is late, and late is inexcusable.”

  25. My favorite Anne quote reminds me of my own husband,

“I wouldn’t want to marry anybody who was wicked, but I think I’d like it if he could be wicked and wouldn’t”

  26. “There’s such a lot of different Annes in me. I sometimes think that is why I’m such a troublesome person. If I was just the one Anne it would be ever so much more comfortable, but then it wouldn’t be half so interesting.” Lucy Maud Montgomery

I love Anne so much! I use to watch it on PBS. I looked forward to watching every time they completed part of the movies from each part of the book. I would love my daughter to read this book.

  27. It’s not an Anne quote because I haven’t read the book yet, but my favorite quote comes from Helen Keller: “When we do the best that we can, we never know what miracle is wrought in our life, or in the life of another.”

Great giveaway. I trying to start a collection of classic books for my daughter and Anne of Green Gables were on my list.

  28. Reading through all thsese posts has been a trip down memory lane… I love my “Anne girl”. I love the videos as well. I love Gilbert because my dh is so like him and I am so head strong like Anne… what sweet thoughts….

  29. “Anyone who has gumption knows what it is, and anyone who hasn’t can never know what it is. So there is no need of defining it.”–L.M. Montgomery

    Thanks for having this!

  30. The author on this is anonymous, but I really like the quote

“When one of your dreams come true, you begin to look at the others more carefully.”

  31. It has been so very long since I read the Anne books. I can’t wait to read them with my daughters. Alas, I don’t recall quotes from the books. But here is a precious quote from a Scotsman:

“You will never find Jesus so precious as when the world is one vast howling wilderness. Then he is like a rose blooming in the midst of the desolation, a rock rising above the storm.”

    – R.M. M’Cheyne

  32. My favorite quote is There is nothing outside that home that can compensate for failure inside the home. But I don’t remember who said it.

  33. From Lord of the Rings:

Frodo: I can’t do this, Sam.

Sam: I know. It’s all wrong. By rights we shouldn’t even be here. But we are. It’s like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn’t want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn’t. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something.

Frodo: What are we holding onto, Sam?

Sam: That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo… and it’s worth fighting for.

  34. Okay in this house my 9 year old daughter just did a HUGE proeject on Lucy Muad Montgomery and how Anne was created. Did you know the book started as a series of magazine articles? She saw girls enjoying the articles and decided toflush out the storyline. Anne is 100 this year and I will be taking my daughter to PEI in August to the very land of Anne and she hasnt read a single Anne book yet but this year in school she did 2 projects that had her fall in love with the land and she hasnt even read Anne yet..planning to do with her this summer as we take the train to Nova Scotia and then the ferry acoss to the island, so this would be a perfect win for us.

Favorite quote of Anne”It’s Anne with an E” and otherwise it is short and simple “Just do it!” Sometimes we can talk ourselves out of the things we could do and well this reminds me to get to it.

  35. “bosom friend” and “carrot top” .
I would love to win this! Please enter me.

  36. My favorite from a different Annie:

    “The sun’ll come out
    So ya gotta hang on
    ’til tomorrow
    Come what may “

  37. Tomorrow is always fresh with no mistakes in it.

I love Anne of Green Gables and read all of the books as well as many other L.M. Montgomery books! Anne with an E is truly a kindred spirit.

  38. Haven’t read the book, but loved the movies. Since I grew up with 4 brothers, I didn’t get to see the movie until I was in High School I think.
It’s not a quote, but probably one of the funniest parts I remember was when she drinks the juice that has fermented! 🙂

  39. Ahh, I remember reading the Anne of Green Gables books when I was younger. It would certainly be a treat to read them again!

I’ll share a quote from another book I read recently, “A Wizard of Earthsea”:
“…As a man’s real power grows and his knowledge widens, ever the way he can follow grows narrower: until at last he chooses nothing, but does only and wholly what he must do…”
I like it because it seems to show how important gaining knowledge and wisdom is, how that knowledge (or lack thereof) really determines how you make choices and determine the path of your life.

  40. I have never read Anne but my mother apparently loved it as a girl in Okinawa… I’d like to see why with my daughter!

The quote that leaps into my mind is “wherever you go, there you are” from Buckaroo Banzai. Kind of stupid and profound at the same time…

  41. “Birth is not only about making babies. Birth is about making mothers – strong, competent, capable mothers who trust themselves and know their inner strength.”
    Barbara Katz Rothman

  42. “I’m going to dance and sing,” she said. “There’s no one here to see me–the seagulls won’t carry tales of the matter. I may be as crazy as I like.” I like this quote of Anne’s and I loved the books.

  43. “If there ever comes a day when we can’t be together, keep me in your heart, I’ll stay there forever” — Winnie-the-Pooh

  44. Great giveaway! I hope i’m the lucky winner! 🙂

my favorite quote is – “you create your own reality” by ernest holmes
